da Hawaiian Store Hand-Carved Polynesian Wood Makau Fish Hook (3 Sizes)
The fish hook is known in Hawaii as the makau and stands for strength, prosperity and respect for the ocean. In the early days of Polynesian settlement in Hawaii, fishermen created fish hooks from whatever material was available. Using just handmade tools and files made from coral and stone, they carved and chiseled fish hooks out of human and whale bones, wood, shells and even canine teeth. The god Maui used one called Mānaiakalani to hook the islands together to try and unite them, making the makau a part of Hawaiian lore. The Makau now represents “a symbol of humans’ connection with the sea, its creatures and the fragile balance of life on the Islands.” These fish hooks are hand carved from wood and wrapped at the end with a cord and have the word "Maui" carved in them. Perfect for hanging. Makes a great gift or ornament to show your love of Hawaii. Comes in three sizes measuring approximately 6, 12 or 15 inches tall. Measurements may vary slightly as they are hand-carved.
