The 18 and 20-inch variety is made with A+ Premium Quality Smooth White Flat Cut Clam Puka Shells The 24-inch is made with natural textured shells and are not smooth like the 20-inch variety. Hand-crafted for us in the Philippines by local artists with real shells, so no two are alike Twist-Barrel Lock Shell size varies, however the average shell size on the 24" is roughly 11/32" or 0.35 Inches, the 20-inch necklaces have slightly smaller shells. The word "puka" means "hole" in the Hawaiian language, which in the case of these necklaces refers to the naturally occurring hole that is found in pieces of shells. Heishe or heishi (pronounced "hee shee") are small disc or tube-shaped fragments made of organic shells or ground and polished stones. The term originated with the Kewa Pueblo people (formerly Santo Domingo Pueblo) of New Mexico. These high-quality necklaces are hand-made for us in the Philippines using real puka shells. Packaged in a drawstring pouch for giving. Could also be taken apart to use shells for other craft projects.
